Your first swimming lesson: what to prepare
Use this guide to prepare a clearer enquiry and compare the details of a swimming lesson before you book. The right choice depends on the learner, the provider and the confirmed pool arrangement.
Choose your preferences. Confirm the coach, venue and session before booking.

Share a useful starting point
Tell the coach whether the learner is comfortable near water, has taken lessons before and can swim any distance without support. For a child, provide an age range and parent contact. Explain the learning goal in ordinary language; you do not need to choose a technical level before the provider assesses it.
Confirm the location before packing
Check the actual pool address and meeting point, not only the area name. Ask who arranges entry and whether instructor access has been approved. Find out whether changing facilities are available and how early you should arrive. If the lesson is at your residential pool, pass on the rules for outside coaches.
Ask what equipment is required
Ask the provider about swimwear, a towel, goggles, a cap and any other equipment. Do not buy training aids simply because another programme uses them. The coach should explain what is suitable for that lesson and whether any equipment is supplied.
Agree supervision and communication
For children, confirm whether a parent must remain poolside or participate, where collection happens and how feedback will be shared. Tell the provider about relevant needs through a private channel. If there are medical concerns affecting exercise, seek advice from an appropriate qualified professional before participating.
Know what the first session can establish
A first lesson can help the coach understand confidence, current skills and a sensible next step. Ask how progress will be reviewed and when the plan should be reconsidered. Learning speed differs, so avoid relying on promises that everyone will swim independently within a fixed number of lessons.
Check the booking terms
Confirm duration, learner count, total cost, pool entry and cancellation or rescheduling conditions. Save the booking details. If you have only sent an enquiry, wait for confirmation before travelling to a venue or paying for separate access.
